“JUST IN TIME. We’re ready to go,” García said to her as she approached him. He set her satchel inside the wagon and assisted her onto the bench seat. “Alvarez, our village doctor, already left in another wagon.”

“Will he be able to help him do you think?”

“I don’t know. Mostly he treats mild illnesses and minor ranching accidents. He recently assisted me with my own bullet wound, however, and I’m still alive. So, I suppose there is hope.”

That certainly didn’t alleviate any of her fears. Hart’s man jumped into the wagon then and scooted his way to the front near the bench.

“Your village doctor is better than anything we have at Hart Ranch. Which is to say, nothing. We have no doctors or healers of any kind,” he said, clearly having heard their conversation.

“I also sent men to fetch the surgeon from Oneida, just as a precaution. Alvarez will probably have Mr. Hart on the mend before he arrives, though,” Garcia reassured.

A man who was helping load the wagon gave García the cue that it was ready. And with a nod of his head and a snap of the reins they were on their way.

Once they were clear of the rowdy party and onto the road, García turned to Hart’s man, “Now, explain to me what happened to Hart.”

Livvy allowed her eyes to shift to better see the creamy dark-skinned man with gray eyes as he detailed the story.

“It was his father.”

“His stepfather, you mean?” García asked.

“Yes. Oscar Rodriguez.”

Livvy closed her eyes, pitying Gabriel. First his brother had tried to kill him, and then his stepfather.

The man continued, “Ever since the deaths of his wife and son, he hasn’t been right. Started acting real peculiar after Gabriel left for university.”

The man seemed especially familiar with Gabriel, not merely a ranch hand as she’d first believed. She wondered at the man’s relationship with Gabriel but tucked the curiosity away for now.

The man continued, “Oscar started thinking his own daughter, Lucy, was his deceased wife. A few months back, he locked Lucy up in a small section of the house. Had the windows barred and even posted guards.”

Livvy swallowed the fear that arose with such an image; of a young woman trapped. Subconsciously, her middle finger began swiping and flicking over the smooth surface of her thumb nail. It was a nervous fiddling, recently developed, she realized, when she became uncomfortable.

“I was finally able to sneak a message from Lucy to Gabriel,” the man’s voice brought her attention back to the story, “then I awaited word from him, but when none came, I went to fetch him myself. Somehow, old man Rodriguez discovered Gabriel was returning and sent his lap dogs out to kill him. We saw them circling the grounds and waited for an opportunity to ride hard for the ranch. A lot of the men on patrol vacated when they heard about a wedding taking place over here. We thought we were in the clear. We split up our routes just in case, to ensure one of us could get to Lucy.
